yesterday i did my psycholinguistics paper, and i wrote about vocabulary . then , i remembered, is vocabulary important for EFL student ? i tried to search on the internet, and i got like this :

1. People judge you by the words you use

Like it or not, every time you speak to someone they are trying to figure out how competent, successful, and smart you are. Research has shown that people are more likely to be judged as competent and smart when they speak with a good vocabulary.

2. Comprehension improves when you know what the words mean. Since comprehension is the ultimate goal of reading, you cannot overestimate the importance of vocabulary development.

3. Increasing your vocabulary allows you to use more descriptive words to better communicate your thoughts.

4. Having a larger vocabulary to call upon will help your verbal communication flow and allow you to start eliminating noises such as, "umm" and "uhh".

5. Knowing more words will make you a better Scrabble® player

I concluded all of that, and i stated like this in my paper ( chapter 1 )

Vocabulary is one of the most important aspects in learning language. Having much vocabulary can make speech more fluent and show our knowledge in a field. Sometimes, people trying to figure out how smart someone from his word. In teaching vocabulary for English as foreign language student, vocabulary important to increase the student comprehension in relation of comprehension as the ultimate goal of reading, listening, writing and also speaking in student ability. Without knowing much vocabulary, the comprehension of the student will be less, besides difficult in understanding a text or material. In general, no language acquisition is possible without understanding the vocabulary, either in the first or the second language (Kweldju, 2004:18, Invest Your Time in Learning English Today For Building).

English as Foreign Language student nowadays have less vocabulary bank in their knowledge. In their school, although government has made curriculum for teacher in teaching English, especially vocabulary, most of teacher still do not understand enough about the curriculum and the way how to teach vocabulary in teaching English. The teacher only stressed in grammar and pronunciations which will useless if those teach without introduce much vocabulary to the student. The teacher also only stress in translating word from the students’ mother language into English, besides the teacher could not carry the student in interesting situation of learning English in class. The teacher still uses the old common methods which most of them are not interesting to use. The result of those is the student will forget words easily besides could not speech with contextual and meaningful vocabularies
